Weekly News Update: Nov 8 – 14

In just her third-career UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup race, Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Spike-Shooter) rode to a victory in the third race of the nine-race series on Sunday in Pijnacker, Holland. Compton finished 34 seconds ahead of Dutchwoman Daphny van de Brand to capture the win. The victory was her second World Cup podium performance of the season after placing second in the season opener in Kalmthout, Belgium last month. After briefly holding the number-one ranking in the world, Compton is now ranked second behind van den Brand by just 15 points, 750-735. Compton, a four-time Paralympic medalist with blind tandem partner Karissa Whitsell in 2004, earned a silver medal at the 2007 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships earlier this year and has already collected nine victories this season in UCI-sanctioned international competition. Compton will next compete at the fourth round of the World Cup in Koksijde, Belgium on Nov. 24. Also at the Pijnacker World Cup, Christine Vardaros (Mill Valley, Calif./Vanderkitten) finished 27th, 6:45 off the pace of Compton in the elite women’s race while Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Sunweb-Projob) was the highest-placed American in the elite men’s race with a 16th-place effort, 4:26 off the pace of winner Lars Boom (NED). Americans Jonathan Baker (Boulder, Colo./Primus-Mootry) and Christopher Jones (New Haven, Conn./Nerac) finished 36th and 40th respectively.

USA Cycling announced this week the roster for the fourth of nine UCI Cyclo-cross World Cups scheduled for November 24 in Koksijde, Belgium. Three women and two men will represent the United States. Women’s UCI World Cup #3 winner Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Spike Shooter) will be joined by Maureen Bruno-Roy (Arlington, Mass./Independent Fabrication) and Christine Vardaros (Mill Valley, Calif./Vanderkitten) in representing the U.S. women while Jonathan Baker (Boulder, Colo./Vitamin Cottage) and Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Sunweb-Projob) will represent the men.

The 2008 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Calendar continued last weekend with three Category-2 races. The Beacon Cross in New Jersey was the first to take place on Saturday. The elite men’s contest was won in solo fashion by Italian Davide Frattini over Justin Spinelli (Providence, R.I./Richard Sachs-RGM Watches) and his teammate Matt Kraus (Arlington, Mass.) respectively. Georgia Gould (Ketchum, Idaho/Luna) won the elite women’s contest by more than two minutes over Maureen Bruno-Roy (Arlington, Mass./Independent Fabrication) and Rebecca Wellons (Woburn, Mass./Ridley Factory Team) who sprinted to second and third respectively.

Also on Saturday, the Mountaineer Cross in Gunnison, Colo. took place as Todd Wells (Durango, Colo./GT) outrode a talented field that included Denmark’s Joachim Parbo and last year’s UCI Junior Cyclo-cross World Championship silver medalist, Danny Summerhill (Englewood, Colo./TIAA-CREF-5280) to take the win. Parbo outsprinted the young Summerhill by a mere two seconds to take the silver. Amy Dombroski (Boulder, Colo./Velo Bella-Kona) and Melissa Thomas (Boulder, Colo./Team Maxxis) gave a preview of the following day’s race, finishing first and second with Nicole Duke (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Cycle Sport) rounding out the podium.

In Sunday’s FLC Squakercross race hosted by Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., Todd Wells (Durango, Colo./GT), Geoff Kabush (CAN), and Joey Thompson (Nevada City, Calif./Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory) spaced out first-, second- and third-place finishes respectively in the elite men’s race while Amy Dombroski (Boulder, Colo./Velo Bella-Kona) and Melissa Thomas (Boulder, Colo./Team Maxxis) again took first and second in the elite women’s contest with Kristin Danielson (Durango, Colo./Velo Bella-Kona) finishing third.
