Background Lighting
“In film, the background light is usually of lower intensity. More than one light can be used to light uniformly a background or alternatively to highlight points of interest.” (Wikipedia)
Background light, cyclocross style. Now on the return from a quick trip to Belgium. Doing the legwork for EuroCrossCamp, some networking for UCI CX Commission, and [...]
Where are they now?
I remember it like yesterday: helping Brent Bookwalter with his Hamlet homework on the return flight from World CX Champs in Zolder, 2002. It was Brent’s first international race experience and my first as national team coach for juniors/u23. And now? Yesterday–2nd in Giro Prologue. Super ride Brent!
Junior World CX Champs, Zolder, Belgium, 2002. Where [...]
Cake
Just back from a whirlwind trip to Belgium for UCI Cyclocross Commission meetings over the weekend. This was our third session of the season since the new commission composition took shape last fall (Nommay in early November, Tabor at the world championships in late January, and now Brussels in late March).
In each meeting, I’ve been impressed with the [...]
Full Tap
EuroCrossCamp VII in the books.
As usual, I’m wasted.
This year, maybe moreso. Seems like we had more adversity than other years. Weather, mechanicals, crashes, logistical challenges etc.
To get us through, as always, I called on a few reliable sources of inspiration to rally the troops: books and heroes.
During one tough moment at a team meeting after [...]
catholic [lower case]
Interesting to follow the Belgian media’s intrigue-bordering-on-pestering of Lars Boom’s decision to commit fully to the road. Just a few weekends ago (during the Nommay World Cup), they again put the same questions to him, seemingly clutching for some sort of miraculous reversal.
Lars is a gracious guy. He figures prominently in the book I’ve been [...]

En avant les progrès (Forward Progress)
Recently appointed to the UCI Cyclocross Commission, I made a quick trip to Euroland over the weekend to our first meeting in Nommay, France. To be able to represent at the governing body level of the sport is an honor and I’m proud to do it to further the sport we all love. The meeting [...]
Vegas Vigor
Good to see everyone in Vegas. Between teaching classes on Wednesday and Parents Open House on Thursday night, I got in 14 hours in Strip City. Bike show, meetings, the race.
Offering a hand to old friend Stu Thorne, quite by coincidence, I ended up fingering Jaime Driscoll’s spare in the pit for the duration of [...]
Connectivity
Was reading Gail Collins’s column in the International Herald Tribune today. She spoke of her sister-in-law who just got back from the Lollapalooza Concert in Chicago. Her sister-in-law related that “at any point you could look around and 50 percent of the people were texting or reading a text.” Certainly the bike racing scene is [...]
Chillin’ It–Killin’ It
Winter gives way to spring. Cyclocrossers take a break, then begin their spring campaigns on the road, trails, and track. Come summer, the form is there and the results follow.
That’s the scene I witnessed–with pride–this week (July 29-August 2, 2009) at the USA National Road Championships in Bend, OR. Being able to watch, witness, and [...]
